Getting back my blogging mojo

Monday, August 03, 2015

I tweeted yesterday that it just takes something a little new, a little makeover to re-motivate you at something. For the last few weeks I'd been feeling really lost at blogging. I was getting bogged down in endless blogging tips posts (which there's nothing wrong with, I love reading and writing them). As I was a bit obsessed and constantly absorbing what others thought I should and shouldn't be doing with my blog, I began to lose sight of what I actually wanted to be doing with my blog. I lost my excitement for blogging and you'll notice there was only one post in the last few weeks. (I did however gain a lot of excitement for updating my Instagram, which you'll hear about in Saturday's blog post!) But without my blog, where did that leave my blog related Instagram too?

Basically I lost my good ol' blogging mojo.

It's hard when you are surrounded by so many amazingly inspiring bloggers. It's hard to think of something new and it's hard to feel like you're even slightly nailing it! But today I discovered it just took one little thing to get the juices flowing again (ew, what a gross saying).

Today I finally took the plunge, put on my big girl pants and bought my own domain name! Wooooo, high five! I'd been reluctant for months about buying my domain name because 1) I didn't know how you did it - blogging newb over here - and 2) I wasn't sure if I was serious enough about blogging to go out there and splash the cash. Whenever I asked for advice however from more established bloggers or read those intimidating blogger tips posts they all pointed to the same thing; get yourself a darn domain name! Saying the whole www.laurakathren.blogspot.co.uk did also become a bit of a mouthful and it always looks that little bit prettier when you've not got such a bulky name. So I bit the bullet and tottered off to GoDaddy and bought a domain name. Oh, but this is me you see, so the whole process wasn't without it's teething problems and hiccups.

So at first I fancied the .co.uk domain name. I liked the fact it scream British haha. Sad? Yes, I know. I bought it at a great price and was all ready to start using it when the voice of Dana from Wonderforest began whispering in my head about privacy protection. I had recently read her post on internet privacy so knew you had to purchase this to stop people seeing your contact details when looking up your domain name. But unfortunately, I made a boob as they say, and found out the hard way that .co.uk domain names are not eligible for privacy protection. So I had to basically chuck away the money I'd paid for that domain (luckily only a couple of pounds) then delete it and buy the .com URL which allowed privacy protection. Urgh.

This is where the whole process got a hell of a lot easier thankfully. Dana Fox, internet superstar again stepped in with one of her fantastic tutorials (if I'm stuck on something I always head to her websites first) on how to set up a custom domain name. I wouldn't have had a clue otherwise! So there we are, I'm now all set up and redirected to www.laurakathren.com and the only thing I'm now waiting on is my Bloglovin' to change.

Squeeeee, I have my own website and domain name.  I feel proper now.

I don't really know how something so small revitalised me in a blogging sense but my excitement for blogging has suddenly found it's way home! I've rejigged my profile pic in my sidebar (who doesn't like icecream) and changed another couple bits and bobs around my layout. I also popped my favourite blogs at the moment in my bottom bar (the lovely Imi, Soph, Amy and Olivia if you're too lazy to scroll) and I've lined up four posts for the next week or so. Sometimes you just need a little summer refresh or makeover to just give you that little buzz again and get some steam in your engines!

I'd love to hear what you've recently changed on your blog and whether it helps you to keep motivated! Thanks all for sticking by me, you wee stars.
