3 Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

I am not ashamed to admit that food is one of my greatest loves and hobbies. I know... sad right? However, recently I have been trying to eat more healthily and go to the gym more often. This is not a diet, and I am not aiming to lose weight. I just wanted make my body a little healthier and fitter! So with that aim in mind I went about trying to find some healthier alternatives to my favourite meals. And this week we're focusing on breakfasts!

PORRIDGE WITH HONEY AND DRIED APRICOTS

First things first, what always put me off porridge was the milk. Weird fact about me, I absolutely hate the smell and taste of milk. Gross. But I decided to give this a whirl and with the honey and fruit I have actually been really enjoying it! Porridge is great for energy and keeps me full for a long time which is great for long days in uni or at the library.

You need:
  • 40g rolled porridge oats
  • 300ml semiskimmed milk
  • fruit to top - I like strawberries and apricots
  • A squeeze of honey
I cheat and make this in the microwave but you can make it on the hob! First of all put your oats in a bowl and pour the milk over. Microwave for 2.5 minutes then stir then microwave for a further minute. Then leave to rest for a minute before drizzling honey and fruit over the top!

COCONUT YOGHURT WITH HONEY, MIXED NUTS, CRANBERRIES AND STRAWBERRIES

This is most definitely my favourite breakfast now. It is filling and good for you and really appeals to my sweet tooth.

You need:
  • Organic coconut yoghurt
  • Honey
  • Mixed nuts/seeds
  • Dried cranberries
  • Strawberries or bananas
This is so easy to make. You basically just throw everything together then eat. Its a very quick breakfast.

HEALTHY 'FRY UP' WITHOUT THE FRYING - GRILLED BACON, POACHED EGGS, ROAST TOMATOES

On a Sunday morning when I have a bit more time this is my go to breakfast. I love a fry up as much as the next person so I tried to think of ways to still get the same flavours but less of the fat.

You need:
  • Unsmoked back bacon
  • Free range eggs
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Wholemeal toast
This is so easy. You basically just grill the bacon so it gets rid of excess fat, poach the eggs with a drop of white wine vinegar, roast the tomatoes in the oven or under the grill and toast your toast! Simples!

Usually I have either vitamin juice or orange juice with my breakfast and a cup of green tea.

Also, my new healthy breakfast find is Crownfield Milled Linseed Cereal Topper with goji berries, chia seeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds. This is great to mix into yoghurt, porridge or muesli. You barely notice it and it adds that extra bit of goodness! Oh and its only £1.99 from Lidl! I love a bargain.

  1. Have you ever tried chia seed pudding? It's super yummy, I actually just made myself some to have tomorrow for breakfast, as it needs to chill overnight. Chia seeds, as I'm sure you know, are super rich in vitamins, and this breakfast is super rich so you don't need to eat a lot. It's one of my favorite foods, you should try it out! :)
